About
“What the [McIlvain] family does not know about lumber is certainly not worth studying. Some lumbermen come and others go, but the McIlvains go on forever.”
-The New York Lumber Trade Journal of June 15, 1898 on the hundredth anniversary of the J. Gibson McIlvain Co.-
With over 200 years in business, wood is in our blood at J. Gibson McIlvain. As it was in the late 18th century, it is the same today: We provide nothing but the best quality wood products. Those products have grown over the years to encompass more species from around the world as well as new advancements in engineered and composite wood products. We are still a family run operation with the 7th generation family member, Caroline McIlvain, as our President.
Today, the J. Gibson McIlvain Co has a global reach with direct relationships with mills and exporters around the world. We carry large quantities of:
- Exotic & Domestic Hardwoods
- Tropical Decking
- Softwoods: CVG and Select Appearance Grades
- Marine Grade Plywood
But it is more than just lumber anymore. J. Gibson McIlvain creates solutions. We work with the architects and builders to create beautiful projects. As the Importer of Record, we have a unique perspective as a company with truly end to end oversight of the supply chain. Whether the issue be sustainable materials, hard to meet specifications or species, millwork execution, or just the logistical dance of delivery on time in good condition, we have the expertise and the resources.
With a comprehensive millwork shop on site at our lumber yard and a full architectural millwork house off site, we can transform our inventory into decks, kitchens, siding, pergolas, siding, or whatever you can dream up. Moreover with line of sight from the joinery all the way back to the sourcing of the materials, we can help value engineer the product for the right species, or size to ensure sustainability, efficiency, and on time delivery.
Quality control doesn’t stop once the order is selected and milled. We want to ensure it gets to you on time and intact. It is this reason that we maintain our own fleet of trucks and a specific section of our mill dedicated to packaging the orders to meet the demands of the job site. Roof top delivery, ability to fit into a freight elevator, island delivery, etc, all of these factors play a major role in how the material is packaged and even whether or not a millwork project is fully assembled or sent in pieces. On many jobs, the order may need to be bundled by specific room to avoid confusion upon delivery and speed up the installation for trim carpenters. This is all part of our service.
We pride ourselves on the quality of our products and take great care in sourcing, grading, and supplying the perfect hardwood, softwood, plywood, or millwork product to you. Give us a call at (800) 638-9100 if you have questions about the woods we sell, the millwork services we offer, or just need some species and wood advice. We can help make your next project a success.
