Building a home requires many things to go right all at the same time. Sourcing lumber is not only finding the right species but finding it in the right grade and size and getting it delivered to a shop or job site (in possibly a difficult location) at just the right time so that workmen aren’t sitting around, on the clock, waiting for material to arrive just so they can do their jobs.

J. Gibson McIlvain has been working with builders and the various contractors involved through the typical job lifecycle for decades, and we understand how important timing is when it comes to getting the lumber to the job site so work can proceed. We simplify this equation by providing multiple products and taking control of the delivery process by using our own fleet of trucks.

So instead of trying to get multiple quotes from multiple vendors and coordinating a number of deliveries to fit into the delicately balanced build schedule, we provide a single source for your entire trim package, plywood, siding, decking boards, flooring, timbers, etc.

Now change this project from a residential to a massive commercial job, and the rules change and oftentimes the complications get hairier. We’ve been there and have frequently worked meticulously through it from stadiums to concert halls, office buildings, and museums and government institutions… all the way back to the building of the White House and Smithsonian.

But our job doesn’t just start in the mud of the job site. We go back to the beginning and work with architects to educate them on new species as the design trends change. We help them to value engineer their designs, so that when it comes time to hand the blueprints over to the builder, it is actually possible to obtain the lumber needed, when in the past it might have been impossible due to species limitations or environmental restrictions. Our staff has literally centuries of experience and knows lumber and the markets better than any other company around.

Finally, when you add to the mix that we are the importer of record on all our exotic materials, and we purchase our domestic materials direct from mills, we have the ability to reduce costs at many levels. Simply reducing the number of middle men in the supply chain will control costs, but more importantly it will eliminate surprises with quality and delivery time frames.
