Furniture, interior design, vehicle fittings and much more – the possibilities are endless, and this is a great alternative for Russian Birch plywood!
What makes our European Poplar plywood panel stand out from the crowd is the fact that it is built in France and has been harvested from PEFC certified forests. Allin (the French manufacturer) has managed to produce a product that not only meets their high standards, but also has the environment in mind. This makes it a great choice for those who value ethical and eco-friendly production practices.
Yellow Poplar vs European Poplar?
In North America when we say “Poplar,” most of us immediately think of the Yellow Poplar trees that grow just about everywhere. We think of the lumber used in great quantities for painted mouldings. The Yellow Poplar (Liriodendron tulipfera) is sometimes used in plywood, but this results in a denser, heavier panel.
European Poplar plywood is assembled with high-grade II and III quality veneers that are 100% European Poplar (Populus tremula). This is similar to Aspen, but it is lighter, less dense and whiter than Yellow Poplar. In comparison, the Janka hardness of European Poplar is 380, compared to the 540 of Yellow Poplar. This gives it a sturdy and durable feel, yet it still maintains a lightweight quality. A European Poplar panel will run about 3-4 lbs lighter per cubic foot.
Birch Alternative?
The light color and clean, defect-free surface is similar to most of the “shop plywood” used by cabinet shops all over the country. And with the massive shortage of Birch plywood, Poplar plywood is a strong alternative. When compared to Russian Birch plywood, our European Poplar panel has much of the same characteristics, but it comes out as being lighter and more stable. In fact, you will find it is a less expensive option as well.
Poplar Plywood Thickness
These panels have a class 3 exterior glue that ensures it holds up well in all weather conditions. The panel is comprised of veneers, which are 1.3mm thick. The overall panel thickness is available from 5mm to 30mm.

Shop Ply or Stable Substrate
Another great benefit of our European Poplar plywood panel is that it can be used as a substrate for face veneers of higher-end species. In other words, it can serve as a sturdy foundation for the veneer of your choice, making it an ideal choice for those who want to achieve a high-end look without breaking the bank. But this is a balanced panel, and in its own right it is ideal to be used as a “shop plywood” option for cabinet carcasses.
So whether you are an interior designer, a furniture maker or simply a lover of quality products, our European Poplar plywood panel is an excellent choice. With its numerous benefits and top-of-the-line construction, you can be confident in your choice and can rest assured that you’re selecting a product which will stand the test of time.
