Give Your Teak a Sun Tan to Correct Its Crazy Color
Every wood specie will change color in the sun and especially right after it has been planed to expose fresh fibers. Teak is a real problem child when it comes to color because of all the oils and resins in the wood that makes it such a great exterior and marine wood species. In this video we break down what is actually happening that causes this dramatic color change after milling and how the sun can be your best friend to correct the streaking and splotchy stains so common in Teak.
More importantly we will show you how to correct this crazy color and bring it back to the lovely, consistent, honey brown that Teak is so famous for.
So grab your white lab coat and lets talk about the science of Teak color change!

We rushed to seal an indoor table with teak sealer worried it would get stained by our two small kiddos but its the ugly multi color striation. If we go ahead and place our table outside to “tan” will the color still even out?… even under the sealer? How long can we expect to have it chilling outside before it evens in tone?
Advice on what to do to remedy this situation without destroying our table…? First teak piece and freaking out over here! Thank you!
Shannon Rogers says
No the color will still change under the finish. Depending on the amount of solid (UV protection) in the finish used it may slow the color change but it will not stop it at all. As far as how long its really hard to say but I imagine you will see a lot of those colors mellowing in a week or so.

We recently purchased a 25 year old boat with teak interior. In updating the decor, we have found that the teak is much darker where pictures had hung. Since we can’t take the walls outside to sun-bleach these dark patches, any suggestions for lightening them? One section is 2 x 4’…. pretty obvious 😜 Thank you!

You can use a bleach based product to speed up the color change. I’ve actually had good luck with toilet bowl cleaner because it is a gel and with a wire brush you can scrub it into the surface. Let it sit for about 15 minutes then wipe it off and you should see a pretty dramatic change.
